In the 1980's there were many new genre's which had been formed. Heavy metal originally had already existed in the 70's as bands such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Judas priest were already active back then. In the early 80's new subgenres of metal had been made such as Thrash metal, Power metal, Speed metal, Death metal, Glam metal and Doom metal. New bands such as Metallica, Venom, Slayer, Megadeth, Helloween, Death, Possessed and Deicide have reached success and were the leading bands in the genre of metal in the 80's. In 1981 Venom released their debut album "Welcome to Hell" which had inspired then many bands to make aggressive and fast music. This had led bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Bathory and Death to make heavier music and to push the boundaries.
This music is still very popular within its music scene which shows that the music is timeless. Also most of the songs within these genre's are quite complex, a example of this can be orion by metallica which is a composition in the classical style but instead of having a full orchestra or a piano the band just uses 2 guitars, a bass and drums which shows how well thought out this compositon had to be.
This genre of music ahs also casued a lot of controversy among people due to the dark theme's used in lyrics as well as the imagery that the bands have used. This form of music was banned in many places and among many communities, many events had also been cancelled due to the protests that had been occuring in the 80's.
