When the pill first came out publicly in 1957 (USA) it was only available to married women who already had children. Later this had been changed so that all women from the age of 16 could have legally taken the pill, more specifically in 1974. As of this event Loretta Lynn wrote a song called "The Pill", also at the time this decision was considered very controversial and still is considered controversial for specific groups. Lastly, this decision has made a massive difference for the lives of many women as before women didn't have much control over their lives and their body while with the pill being available to all single women there was a option now for them to have control over their bodies and for them to make a career in certain industries and not sit at home and take care of the children.
The pill itself is made to prevent unwanted pregnancies, it can last from one to up to four days with a success rate of 99%. The pill also decreases the chance of ovarian cancers as well as it can lead to a improvement in the consumers mood.
On the other hand there are many side effects of the pill which could have been not known before. A example of these side effects is that it increased the chance of getting breast cancer by 125% for women who had been taking the pill for more than 4 years. Another side effect caused by the pill can be blood clots and that is why the pill is not recommended for women over 35 who smoke heavily or are obese as there is a increased risk of getting blood clots which could lead up to a heart attack, Not to mention that the pill also can result in weight gain.
