Time based effects are effects that manipulate time by adding delay, echo, reverb and other effects to the initial signal. These effects try and reproduce the effect that happens naturally to any given sound in a closed environment. Some of those time-based effects are reverb, delay, echo and a looper.

To start off, there are three kinds of reverb, one being spring reverb, second one being digital and the other being the plate reverb. Spring reverb is generated by a spring that is connected to a pickup and to a transducer. This then causes the spring to vibrate and add reverb to the original signal. Plate reverb is created by a metal plate with springs on the end with a transducer connected to transmit the signal and a microphone at the end of the signal chain to pick up the vibrations of the metal plate. Digital reverb is programmed and allows you to set preset's. The reverb here is created by digital algorithms. An example of a famous reverb pedal is the Strymon Bigsky.
