Working on Sound for film

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

Today I have worked on the clip for World War Z. Firstly, I have managed to get a suitable airplane engine sound by taking the sound of a jet plane passing by and cutting the loudest part and repeating it throughout the flight of the plane. Next up I have applied panning to the sound of the plane so as the plane moves from right to left so does the sound. Then I have applied automation to the volume of the sample so that when the cockpit of the plane is shown with the characters, the volume of the sample decreases due to the fact that the sound is slightly isolated.

Moving on to the voices of the character when he speaks inside the cockpit, I have managed to find a Brad Pitt sample of him talking which was ideal as the character in World War Z is played by Brad Pitt. Next up I will have to adjust the sample so that it will fit the clip and adjust the volume and add any necessary effects. After applying the voice samples I have then moved onto the landing of the plane. For this I have used another sample of a plane landing and added short samples of the wheels hitting the surface creating a high pitched, screeching noise.

Then moving onto the next part of the scene, they are flying a helicopter so I have added a sample of a helicopter flying and repeated this throughout the flight. I have also applied automation such as panning and volume adjustments to make the flight seem more realistic. Also when the cars/trucks are shown from above I have remained with the sound of the helicopter flying as it then looks like the vehicles are show from the helicopter and so if you're in the helicopter then that would be the primary sound you hear. I have also added a snare drum where a pattern is repeatedly played to give the clip that military vibe. Next up when there is a close up of the vehicles I have added the sample of a car passing by and then applied automation to it such as panning and volume adjustments. This is so as the truck passes by, the sound does as well. After this the camera returns to the helicopter where I again add the same sample of the helicopter flying and once again the vehicles are shown from above which allowed me to pretty much just repeat what I had done before.

Next I will have to finish the military music for the scene as well as I will need to add more sound effects for the scene. I have also thought of adding a reveal for when they are flying the helicopter as now they have actually arrived in Israel and they are just travelling to the safe zone. For the soundtrack, so far I have the backbone which is the snare keeping the beat. Next I will need to add other instruments while I do want to keep the composition simple due to the fact that most military soundtracks are quite simple and so I would rather prefer to keep the soundtrack quite traditional. In my opinion this would also make the soundtrack set a mood for the next scene as after this scene ends the zombies manage to climb over the wall due to the noise caused which attracted them and the main character is not safe anymore.
